I was the founding travel editor of the San Francisco Examiner and served as travel editor of the S.F. Examiner-Chronicle for 19 years. I am now a full-time freelance travel writer and photographer. I've received many awards, including the Ordre du Merite from the French government in 1982. I teach at the annual Travel Writers Conference, Book Passage, Corte Madera, California, and frequently am on local radio discussing aspects of travel.
